Exploring the Riches of Shey-Phoksundo: Assessing Non-Timber Forest Products

In the serene landscapes of Shey-Phoksundo Rural Municipality, nestled in Saldang, Dolpa lies a treasure trove beyond just scenic beauty. From December 2020 to June 2021, we embarked on an enlightening journey to assess the conservation status, challenges, and opportunities surrounding Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs).

Our mission was twofold: to understand the ecological balance these products contribute to and to uncover the economic potential they hold for local livelihoods. NTFPs, ranging from medicinal herbs to aromatic resins, are not only integral to the region’s biodiversity but also offer sustainable income opportunities for communities.

Through meticulous research and engagement with local stakeholders, we delved into the intricate web of challenges faced in harvesting and marketing these products sustainably. Equally, we identified promising avenues where improved practices and market access could enhance both conservation efforts and the prosperity of those reliant on these natural resources.

This journey has not only enriched our understanding of Shey-Phoksundo’s natural wealth but has also underscored the urgent need for collaborative efforts to safeguard these resources while ensuring equitable benefits for all involved.

Join us as we continue to champion the conservation and sustainable utilization of Shey-Phoksundo’s Non-Timber Forest Products, paving the way for a harmonious coexistence of nature and livelihoods in this breathtaking corner of Dolpa.
